teamLab Planets Tokyo: A Multisensory Pause in a Universe of Light

 There are journeys that are not measured by the distance we walk, but by the degree to which our mind relaxes. When visiting the teamLab Planets digital art museum in Tokyo, the first thing I did was take off my shoes, allowing my bare feet to directly touch the cool surfaces that gradually turned warm. Shedding the soles of my shoes felt like a small ritual, separating me from the hurried life outside so I could step into an entirely new sensory world.

Gentle Warm Waters and a Floating Universe of Flowers

The very first sensation awakening every sense was when my bare feet sank into gentle warm water within a quiet dark space. Walking leisurely through cool water that smoothly shifted into warmth, it felt as though all the tiredness accumulated after long days of traveling washed away with the stream.

Leaving the water area, my steps led me into another wondrous dome room. Here, I chose to lie flat on the floor, releasing my entire body to look up at the deep ceiling above. High above, countless flowers made of light swirled around, falling and continuing to bloom in an endless cycle. It felt as if an entire universe of flowers was suspended right over my head, embracing my gaze and tenderly soothing my mind.

A Galaxy of LED Lights and Glowing Spheres in the Garden

Leaving the water area behind, my footsteps brought me into a maze composed of thousands of LED light strands cascading down from the ceiling. These continuous streams of light reflected across endless mirrors, creating a shimmering galaxy with no end. Standing motionless in one spot, the rhythm of the light shifted melodically, wrapping around me.

Strolling out into the outdoor space, a completely different atmosphere unfolded with a moss garden blanketed in green. Nestled among the cool refreshing vegetation were ovoid spheres shining with a metallic luster. They reflected the sky, the surrounding landscape, and the silhouettes of visitors, radiating a soft enchanting glow.

The Floating Orchid Room

Perhaps the most profound moment of stillness was stepping into the space filled with countless fresh orchid branches. Thousands of vibrant blossoms hung down from above. The natural scent of orchids drifted softly through the air, making me lose all track of time. Because the sitting time was limited, I focused entirely on watching the gentle movement of the fresh petals, sensing an absolute harmony between technology and natural beauty.

The Quiet Beauty of Late Afternoon

I chose to visit teamLab Planets late in the afternoon, when the dense daytime crowds had gradually thinned out. Stepping outside the museum as dusk began to settle, a soft soothing space welcomed my footsteps once more. The cool afternoon air was refreshed by a sea breeze from Toyosu Bay, while the evening glow painted a delicate hue across the broad courtyard and surrounding streets.

Returning to the real world after an immersive journey through light, fragrance, and water, all my senses felt newly refreshed. Standing before the vast open space outside the museum, watching the city lights begin to illuminate in the distance, I experienced a very different Tokyo: unhurried, peaceful, with only absolute stillness and a lasting peaceful lingering after a visit.

Kiyomizu-zaka & Chawan-zaka: Two Streets to Kiyomizu-dera

I kept finding small reasons to stop on the way to Kiyomizu-dera. There was a plant beside a wooden doorway, a neat row of pottery inside a shop, and a tiled roof above a quiet stretch of road. It was September in Kyoto, still a little hot, but comfortable enough to enjoy being outside. I had chosen Chawan-zaka for the walk uphill, and I was happy to take my time. A quiet corner at the entrance to Chawan-zaka, where wooden buildings and carefully tended plants made me slow down. Chawan-zaka and nearby Kiyomizu-zaka both lead towards Kiyomizu-dera, also known as Kiyomizu Temple, in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district . I photographed both streets during my visit. One was quiet, with fewer visitors and plenty of small details to notice. The other was busy with shops, colourful sweets and people looking around. The Little Wooden Cabin by the Lagoon on a Northern Island

There are places you stumble upon almost by accident, and places you choose deliberately. Blue Lagoon Cat Ba was somewhere in between for me, a quiet corner of the island that I had read about briefly, bookmarked without much thought, and then found myself grateful for in ways I hadn't expected. The cable car ride to the island was an experience in itself. Getting there was part of the experience itself. I rented a car from Hanoi , taking the road toward the Sunworld Cat Ba Cable Car . The cable car ride alone was worth the detour. From up high, you get a view that no ferry or road could give you: the coastline unfolding below, the harbor settled quietly at the edge of the island, and that particular line where land meets sea, soft and blurred in the afternoon light.
