Odaiba: A spontaneous destination to feel a piece of Tokyo

 Stepping onto Japanese soil for the very first time, I carried the hesitation of a traveler standing before a completely unfamiliar world. Everything from the streets and signboards to the rhythm of daily life made me pause just a little. On my first day visiting the artificial island of Odaiba nestled in Tokyo Bay, I held no checklist of essential stops, nor did I craft a detailed plan. Choosing the Statue of Liberty as my main anchor, I embraced this island with the curious wonder of a guest visiting for the first time.

How Odaiba Unfolded Before My Eyes

It began with slipping into a shopping mall simply to rest my feet and enjoy a late lunch. The mall was still quite lively then, so once I finished eating, I stepped out onto the spacious courtyard outside. There, I was caught completely off guard by a giant robot standing tall in the center of the plaza. That towering steel machine appeared so surreal, making me feel as if I had accidentally wandered into a frame of a Japanese anime. Even without a deep understanding of that world, its sheer magnitude and intricate details were enough to spark a sense of pure, childlike delight in my heart.

By this time, the outdoor space had grown quieter, so I walked slowly toward the waterfront. A refreshing breeze blew in from Tokyo Bay, carrying the open freedom of the sea right into the heart of a modern metropolis. At the end of the promenade, the replica of the Statue of Liberty stood proudly facing the bay, with the sweeping bridge curving gracefully in the distance beneath the vast sky.

I stood there for a long time, simply admiring everything with eyes full of wonder, watching footsteps pass by and breathing in the open air. There was no need to cross countless streets or rush through a long list of sights, for that quiet moment of gazing at the architectural landmarks around me was more than enough to leave a lasting impression

I felt that this corner of Odaiba, despite housing such massive structures, still maintained a rhythmic breathing space. For all its modernity, Odaiba held something gentle, slow, and unhurried, a sense of lingering freedom polished by time. I may not find the exact words to articulate it, but I know it never overwhelmed me with its grand scale; instead, it gently urged my wandering soul to explore deeper.

That brief visit to Odaiba offered me a gentle lesson in reflection when arriving at a new destination. We do not need to exhaust ourselves trying to uncover every layer of a city during our very first visit. Simply wandering through a shopping mall, unexpectedly encountering a giant robot, and strolling casually to the waterfront to admire the statue is already a complete memory.

It was precisely that spontaneous and unhurried nature that made my moments in Odaiba linger so clearly, free of pressure and filled with profound peace.

Kiyomizu-zaka & Chawan-zaka: Two Streets to Kiyomizu-dera

I kept finding small reasons to stop on the way to Kiyomizu-dera. There was a plant beside a wooden doorway, a neat row of pottery inside a shop, and a tiled roof above a quiet stretch of road. It was September in Kyoto, still a little hot, but comfortable enough to enjoy being outside. I had chosen Chawan-zaka for the walk uphill, and I was happy to take my time. A quiet corner at the entrance to Chawan-zaka, where wooden buildings and carefully tended plants made me slow down. Chawan-zaka and nearby Kiyomizu-zaka both lead towards Kiyomizu-dera, also known as Kiyomizu Temple, in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district . I photographed both streets during my visit. The Little Wooden Cabin by the Lagoon on a Northern Island

There are places you stumble upon almost by accident, and places you choose deliberately. Blue Lagoon Cat Ba was somewhere in between for me, a quiet corner of the island that I had read about briefly, bookmarked without much thought, and then found myself grateful for in ways I hadn't expected. The cable car ride to the island was an experience in itself. Getting there was part of the experience itself. I rented a car from Hanoi , taking the road toward the Sunworld Cat Ba Cable Car . The cable car ride alone was worth the detour. From up high, you get a view that no ferry or road could give you: the coastline unfolding below, the harbor settled quietly at the edge of the island, and that particular line where land meets sea, soft and blurred in the afternoon light.
