A Still Morning at Black Dragon Pond Lijiang

That trip to Lijiang has receded far into the past. I cannot recall the exact name of each stone bridge or the history of the wooden temples scattered around the park, yet there is one thing time cannot fade: the serene sense of peace and the deep essence of Chinese culture lingering throughout Black Dragon Pond.

For a wandering traveler, slow travel is not about attempting to memorize every page of a guidebook, but rather about allowing the atmosphere to gently seep into your soul.

A Reflection Beneath the Snowy Mountain

People often say this is the most iconic photography spot in Lijiang, where a single frame can capture ancient tiled roofs, sweeping stone bridges, and the majestic snowy peak in the distance. Yet, when I finally stood there, what truly held me still was not the desire to find a perfect angle.

It was the moment I paused by the lake, watching the pure white reflection of the mountain resting quietly upon the jade green water. The plateau sky was so extraordinarily clear that every detail appeared remarkably sharp. Whenever a gentle breeze swept across, that living ink painting rippled softly, creating delicate waves before slowly returning to its initial tranquility.

Sitting by the lake for a long time, I came to realize just how magical the clear water beneath my feet truly was. This is where the melted snow from the high mountains gathers, creating the source for the entire network of canals that wind through every street corner and doorway in Lijiang.

That connection brought an extraordinarily gentle feeling. The babbling waters heard throughout the old town actually begin right here in this clear blue lake. Resting on a bench under the shade of trees, watching foliage drape close to the water surface, I could feel the slow rhythm of Lijiang, a breath of life undisturbed by the hurried steps of tourists.

What Remains in the Mind

That visit years ago taught me that the true worth of a journey lies not in the number of details we memorize, but in the emotions we bring home. I may forget the names of everything, yet the feeling remains completely intact: the gentle chill of the morning mist, the jade hue of the lake, and the profound peace that filled my chest that day.

It was right at Black Dragon Pond that I truly experienced the authentic spirit of Lijiang, an atmosphere distilled from distant snowy peaks, cool subterranean springs, and the unhurried elegance inherent to this land. This place is not merely a stop along the way, but a pure stillness that allowed me to capture the very soul of the ancient town.
