Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri La, Yunnan, China, is a historic Tibetan settlement renowned for its timeless cultural heritage. Famously known as the Moonlight City, the town features centuries old cobblestone pathways, intricately carved wooden architecture, traditional bronze prayer wheels, and the iconic Grand White Stupa at Moonlight Square, offering a serene and historically rich sanctuary for slow travel enthusiasts.
Dukezong Ancient Town is a place I had the opportunity to visit during a trip to the Shangri-La plateau in Yunnan Province, China. This is an ancient town with a history of over 1,300 years, fully preserving the breath of Tibetan culture and the legendary imprints of the Ancient Tea Horse Road.

Spinning these bronze prayer wheels with a gentle touch, sending wishes of goodwill into the high altitude air.
From my perspective, the ancient town is very well preserved and restored, filled with local cultural colors at every turn. This visit was relatively uncrowded, so I could freely capture stunning photographs. There were many cultural symbols whose meanings I didn't know, but they were colorful and looked vibrant nonetheless. Due to limited time, I could not explore the entire ancient town and even got a little lost before heading back.
Another beautifully adorned storefront catching my eye with its striking traditional facade.
Just before sunset, the weather was still very cold, yet the ancient town grew warmer thanks to the golden sunset glow stretching across the ancient stone-paved streets. The deep blue sky remained cloudless toward the end of the afternoon; the space felt somewhat deserted, but that was exactly what created an unforgettable impression in my heart. Perhaps this is one of the most beautiful ancient towns I have ever visited; the atmosphere there is unlike anywhere else.
